Warmi was founded in
November 1982 as a center for women of Villa Barrientos to
gather and help one another in weaving and sewing so they
could make some money to support their hungry children.
Warmi has developed into a community factory which makes
three types of soap: the Bar Soap to wash cloths, the
Medical Soap, and the Laminated Soap.
The Warmi community of low income
women, many of whom are illiterate, are encouraged to
participate in the reading and learning center while
undergoing job training.
The work at the center required the
housewives to form a day-care program for their children.
This day-care center proved so successful that many other
children of the neighborhood are now enrolled in it.
At the day-care facility children receive food, help with
their homework, and medical assistance.
Warmi participated in a beautification
project for the neighborhood by planting trees, and also
completed a drinking water project. Currently, they
are creating “El Rincon de la Mujer,” a center where women
can ask for help, relax or talk to one another.
